This scholarship will provide Matthew with a great opportunity to further develop his skills and knowledge, completing his final-year rotation in dairy practice.

Charles Sturt University student Matthew De Cicco is the winner of the 2017 Greenham GOTAFE Dairy Scholarship.

Now in his final year of a Bachelor of Veterinary Biology/Bachelor of Veterinary Science at CSU in Wagga Wagga, Mr De Cicco hails from Merrigum, a town in Victoria’s Goulburn Valley.

Mr De Cicco will use the $12 000 scholarship to fund a month-long work placement at Cornell University’s Ambulatory and Production Medicine Clinic in the USA in January.

“I hope this experience will open up a number of pathways for the future, build lasting relationships and international contacts,” Mr De Cicco said.

“I hope to come home and share my experiences and acquired knowledge to benefit the Australian dairy sector.”

CSU lecturer Dr Angel Abuelo said, “This scholarship will provide Matthew with a great opportunity to further develop his skills and knowledge, completing his final-year rotation in dairy practice.

“Cornell is one of the few Ivy League schools in the USA with a veterinary science program and has continuously been ranked in the top three courses worldwide.

“Matthew will complete his rotation at the Ambulatory and Production Medicine Clinic with renowned specialists in the fields of metabolic diseases, calf health, and control and prevention of infectious diseases.

“Matthew, in my view, will become a major figure in dairy production medicine in the future. He has all the attributes to make substantial contributions to enhancing health and production of dairy cows,” the CSU academic said.

The veterinary science program is offered through the CSU School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences in Wagga Wagga.
