Lamb survival strategies to be outlined at sheep forum

Industry experts will discuss their latest research findings around issues of key relevance to producers and the Australian sheep industry at this year’s Graham Centre Sheep Forum on Friday 8 July.

Mark Harvey-Sutton, Sheepmeat Council of Australia will set the scene for the day discussing research priorities and the sheep industry strategic plan (2015-2020), and what this means for future research and development and marketing initiatives for the industry.

Rob Woodgate, CSU, will discuss worm control, and sheep management to reduce the onset of resistance across the region and the impact of worms on sheep.

CSU researcher Susan Robertson will provide practical advice on management strategies to improve lamb survival and present her teams latest research findings around this topic, while Lockhart producer Tim Westblade will talk about his own experiences and management to improve lamb survival on-farm. Shawn McGrathFred Morley Unit, will discuss his whole farm modelling work looking at the long-term impacts on productivity and gross margins of sheep enterprises, and managing flocks based on scanning results and feeding to meet body condition score targets.

PhD student Lucy Watt will present her research on lamb growth rates from grazing hard-seeded pasture legumes as an alternative to sub clover, while our final speaker on the program, Janelle Jenkins, Riverina LLS, will discuss findings from a recent project looking at issues relating to maintaining sub clover in pastures.
