A powerful Docklands son caught the eye of a Victorian stud and topped the Karoo Angus sale at $30,000 on Friday.
Karoo D62 Docklands K194, a July 2014 drop son of Carabar Docklands D62, was snapped up by stud stock consultant Dick Whale on behalf of Mark Gubbins, Coolana Angus, Mortlake, Vic.
The bull weighed 870kg, had a scrotal circumference of 43cm, birthweight EBV of +4.1kg, 600 day growth of +120kg, and intramuscular fat percentage of +1.7.
The sale, held on-property at Bathurst by the Reen family, resulted in a total clearance of 71 bulls for a record average if $9056.
Stud co-principal Annie Scott said the sale average was up on last year and solid throughout.
Mrs Scott said the sale drew repeat and new buyers from Walgett, Scone, Victoria and Queensland.
“Buyers were chasing low to moderate birthweight, high growth, positive carcass traits and calving ease,” she said.
“The strength of the bull market is being driven by the commercial market with the eastern young cattle indicator being over 700c/kg CW.”
Stud stock consultant Dick Whale said Coolana Angus had been searching for a Docklands son for two years.
“This particular bull appealed for his mobility, softness, structural soundness and docility.
“He is a good a two year old Docklands bull as I’ve seen in the last two years – that sire line has been popular in sales because calving ease, low birthweight and high growth.
“The sale was very solid but there were bulls in the $4000-$5000 pricing which meant no one coming to Karoo wouldn’t have walked away with a bull.”
