Stud cattle competition draws 1676 entries for Rocky

Beef-2015A jewel in the crown of Beef Australia 2018, the Landmark Stud Cattle Competition, will shine brightly at this year’s National expo with record nominations received.

1676 nominations have been received, which is an increase of 281 head or just over 20 percent on Beef Australia 2015 numbers.

The most represented breed from a total of 32 breeds on the grounds this year, will be the Droughtmaster with over 250 animals being shown, this figure itself being a record for any individual breed in the history of the prestigious competition.

Other breeds with large numbers include Brangus, Brahman, Santa Gertrudis, Charolais and Simmental, whilst new entrants this year are Fleckvieh, Brahmalow and Queenslander.

The Beef Australia 2018 Stud Cattle Committee were anticipating robust numbers based on various indicators, but are delighted with the final figure.

“With sustained general widespread industry confidence, a 20 year high number of registered cattle across Australia, and recent healthy stud sales, we were confident of strong entry numbers,” explained Stud Committee Chairman Russell Hughes. “However 1676 entries has exceeded our expectations.”

“We began speaking with producers and breed societies back in June last year to allow us to better plan our preparations and format for the competition. Based on that feedback, it’s now our job to provide the best possible platform and program to allow Australia’s most accomplished and recognised seed stock producers to best showcase their animals in an inviting and competitive environment, to our thousands of domestic and international visitors.” Said Russell

The committee have also been busy generating new ideas and initiatives for 2018, including a centre ring ‘grab and go’ outlet providing good basic food and hot and cold drinks, and plenty of shaded seating.

Competitors and spectators will no longer have to leave the judging arena for a cuppa or a sandwich, and for people with extra time on their hands, a sit down air conditioned centre ring bistro is also an option.

If for any reason you’ve been tardy with your nominations for the Landmark Stud Cattle Competition, late entries along with withdrawals and substitutions will be accepted up until Friday, 2 March 2018.
