Trefusis Merino stud wins national champion fleece

Fleece-championGeorgina Wallace, Trefusis Merino Stud, Ross, Tasmania has again reigned supreme, taking out the title of Grand Champion in the 2018 Australian Fleece Competition with a fine Merino fleece.

Trefusis is the first exhibitor to take out the major award three times in the competition’s 18 year history.

The competition attracted 446 entries this year, an increase of 7% on last year’s number, representing all major wool types and wool growing states.

The Performance Class, which caters for exhibitors shearing in six to eight-month cycles commercially was again well supported, with this year’s winner being ME & GN Mortlock, “Belvue”, Dunluce, Victoria.

Almost two thirds of the fleeces will be donated at the conclusion of the competition to this year’s nominated charity, the Lyme Disease Association Australia.

All competition fleeces were weighed and sampled for objective measurement (including length and strength), under standard procedures of the Australian Wool Testing Authority.
