First cross ewe demand remains strong at $436

Ewes-coomaAfter last week’s record-breaking price for first cross ewes, prices remained strong for this category selling from $296 to $436, averaging $364, down $1.

Demand was strong with a 94% clearance achieved for the smaller offering of 2,720 this week.

A line of 211 19-20-month-old SIL BL/Mer ewes weighing 64kgs (pictured) achieved the top price. Offered by A/c ‘Thubergal’ from Cooma, NSW these ewes are 2-3 months SIL to Poll Dorset rams.

Another highlight was a line of 14-15-month old SIL ewes from Elmore, VIC by A/c ‘MC & RA Henke’. These ewes sold for $411, weighing 73kgs with 2.5-3” skins, they are 4-5-months SIL to White Suffolk rams.

First cross ewe lambs were in high demand once again this week achieving a 100% clearance rate and prices jumping $14 to average $301.

Selling from $186 to $328, the top price went to a line of 200 BL/Mer ewe lambs weighing 54kgs from Gulgong, NSW offered by A/c ‘Talinga Pastoral Co’. These Jul/Aug ’19 drop lambs have 2-2.5” skins and will make their way to Forbes, NSW.

Merino ewe lambs sold from $156 to $267, averaging $203, firm on last week with an 83% clearance for the 5,375 head offered.

The top price went to a line of 48kgs 11-12-month-old Poll Merino ewe lambs from Manangatang, VIC with 2.5-3” skins on their backs, offered by A/c ‘LJ & RC Plant’. Selling for $240, from Galore, NSW, offered by A/c ‘Leitchfield’, a line of 9-10-month-old future breeder ewe lambs achieved the next best price. Weighing 44kgs, these Langdene blood ewes have 1-1.5” skins on their backs.

Merino ewe hoggets sold from $156 to $320, averaging $266, down $14, yet reaching 94% clearance. A/c ‘Dunluse’ from Henty, NSW offered the top priced line with 145 2-year-old Woodpark blood SIL ewes weighing 61kgs. These ewes have 2.5-3” skins on their backs and are SIL to Coopworth rams.

Prices for young Merino breeders (2-4 years) corrected this week selling from $169 to $327, averaging $260, back $17 after last week’s $51 jump. A/c ‘Chelwood Farming’ offered the top priced line with 228 SIL ewes from Mintaro, SA.

These 3-4-year-old Leahcim blood ewes weigh 62kgs, have 1.5-2” skins and are SIL to Poll Merino rams. From Chatsworth, VIC, A/c ‘Lime Creek Trust’ offered a line of 271 rising 3-year-old SIL ewes weighing 59kgs. These Willera blood ewes have 2-2.5” skins, are SIL to Merino rams and sold for $300.

Proven Merino breeders (4+ years) saw strong prices this week to average $261, up $9. Prices ranged between $171 and$333 with a 79% clearance rate. From Parkes, NSW, A/c ‘CJ & JW Hall’ offered a line of 306 mixed-age SIL ewes.

Weighing 61kgs, these Centre Plus and Yarong blood ewes have 1.5” skins and are SIL to Border Leicester rams. A line of 550 5-year-old SIL ewes from Nyngan, NSW by A/c ‘Jumbuck Pastoral’ sold for $301. These Gunbar blood ewes weigh 53kgs, have 1-1.5” skins and are SIL to Merino rams.

Among the 15,015 Merino wether lambs offered this week, 14,414 head sold, with prices from $119 to $194, averaging $162, up $7 on last week. From Tarago, NSW a run of 44kgs Greendale and Hazeldean blood wether lambs with 3” skins topped the category, offered by A/c ‘AD & SC Wilson’. A/c ‘Burrenbilla Past Co’ from Cunnamulla, QLD offered a line of 720 4-5-month-old Poll Merino store wether lambs. These Haddon Rig blood lambs sold for $166, weighing 39kgs with 1-1.5” skins on their backs.

Merino wethers sold from $140 to $194, averaging $168, up $3 on last week to achieve a 75% clearance rate.

The top price went to a line of 32-33-month-old 52kgs wethers from Daysdale, NSW offered by A/c ‘Urunpungee’. These Nerstane blood wethers have 2.5-3” skins and will be heading to Epsom, VIC.

Western Australia had another strong offering of 6,294 head, back 3,026 on last week. Achieving an 89% clearance rate, the current market trend sees demand in the eastern states continue with all lines heading interstate to SA, VIC and NSW.

Merino ewe lambs were the largest stock category on offer with prices between $176 and $230, averaging $214, down $3. From Newdegate, a line of 650 High Valley and East Mundella blood future breeder ewe lambs achieved the top price, offered by A/c ‘RA Iffla & Partners’.

Weighing 43kgs, these May/Jun ’19 drop lambs will be heading to Nyngan, Central Western NSW. Following closely behind, selling for $228, was a line of Jul/Aug ’19 drop, AMS blood future breeders from Tammin, offered by A/c ‘Anameka Farms’. These ewes weigh 43kgs with 1-1.5” skins on their backs.

Tasmanian sheep remained in high demand this week with another 100% clearance for the 1,265 head offered. Merino ewes sold from $141 to $175, averaging $164. From Cleveland, A/c ‘P W Grey’ offered a line of 170 mixed-age NSM Poll Merino ewes topped the category. These Kerin and Lewishham blood ewes weigh 71kgs with 1” skins.

Mixed sex crossbred lambs sold between $155 and $157, averaging $156, down $8 on last week. The top price went to a line of 200 Aug/Sept ’19 drop Corriedale mixed sex store lambs. Weighing 41kgs with 1.5-2” skins, these lambs will be heading north to Picola, VIC.

Store lamb numbers eased again this week although demand remained strong with an 89% clearance, selling 3,091 head. Prices were up by 32c, selling between 426c to 697c, averaging 497c. Some of the highlights include:

– Jan ’20 drop – 23kg 1st X White Suffolk/Merino mixed sex suckers from LONGWOOD, Victoria sold for $154 or 697c

– Feb/Mar ’20 drop – 35kg 2nd X Poll Dorset/Border Leicester/Merino mixed sex suckers from TEMORA, New South Wales sold for $187 or 562c

– Jul/Aug ’19 drop – 36kg 2nd X Poll Dorset/Composite mixed sex store lambs from BOWNA, New South Wales sold for $177 or 500c

– Jul/Aug ’19 drop – 34kg Dorper mixed sex store lambs from DEEPWATER, New South Wales sold for $164 or 495c

– Jul/Aug ’19 drop – 41kg 1st X White Suffolk/Merino mixed sex store lambs from KATUNGA, Victoria sold for $169 or 427c
