Australia’s newest saleyards the Western Victoria Livestock Exchange at Mortlake passed the final planning hurdle enabling construction to start.
The Mortlake site expects to see a throughput of 200,000 cattle per year with 400 selling pens with a capacity of 3500 animals.
Moyne Shire Council issued a planning permit on 30 March, 2017 requiring detailed plans be lodged of the buildings, landscaping and engineering designs.
These plans have been submitted and approved which allows works on the site to commence.
Moyne Shire Mayor Cr Jim Doukas said that it was great that the plans had been fully endorsed.
“This development means so much because it supports Moyne’s principal business, agriculture.
“Construction will see about 100 jobs created, while another 22 full-time jobs will need to be filled once the saleyards is up and running,” said Cr Doukas.

“Around 1.7 million cattle are farmed within a 200-kilometre radius of Mortlake.
“It’s great news for Moyne Shire that many of these animals will be sold through the Mortlake saleyards.”
