Hereford cattle have opened the run of Tasmanian autumn weaner sales by topping the weaner steers at Powranna last week.
Roberts Ltd and Elders held their first weaner calf sale on Thursday, February 11, about a month earlier than normal due to dry seasonal conditions, with 3295 head yarded.
The majority of cattle came from the North East, Midlands and Derwent Valley with liveweights down on previous years.
The sale was marked by the biggest contingent of interstate buyers ever seen with prices hitting record highs.
Close to 60 per cent of the yarding was bought for interstate orders from Bendigo, Victoria, to Roma, Queensland, according to MLA’s National Livestock Reporting Service.
In the weaner steers weighing 200kg and under, 113 Herefords sold to a top of 405c/kg or $735 and averaged 400c/kg or $666.Hereford steers weighing 200-280kg topped and averaged $845 or 330c/kg.
Black Baldy steers weighing 280-330kg topped and averaged 281c/kg or $870 while the Hereford pens same weight topped at $1030 or 330c/kg and averaged $1040 or 322c/kg.
In the heavy end of the weaner steers of 330kg plus, Herefords topped the weaner yarding overall on $1130 (321c/kg) while Black Baldies made $960 (282c/kg).
Among the weaner heifers, 134 Herefords 200kg and under sold to $560 or 297c/kg, those weighing 200-280kg topped at $870 or 333c/kg and females weighing 280-330kg sold to $935 or 312c/kg.
Yearling heifers 330kg and under topped at $990 or 305c/kg and those weighing 330-400kg fetched $990 or 283c/kg.The run of weaner sales are scheduled to continue at Powranna on March 3 and 17, and April 21.
