Hereford heifers have sold up to 444c/kg, purebred steers to 459c/kg and Black Baldy steer weaners to 467c/kg on AuctionsPlus.
The feature lines of European Union accredited spring-drop weaners were offered by Cobungra Station, Omeo, Vic, and David Parker, Milbis Pty Ltd, Carboor, Vic.
The Black Baldy steer weaners, aged eight to nine months, averaged 187kg liveweight and were sold for $875 or 467c/kg by Cobungra Station.
The heavier portion, averaging 234kg, made 450c/kg or $1055 while Cobungra’s Hereford steers, 187kg, Injemira blood, fetched 459c/kg or $860.
The heavier purebred pens, 238kg, 9-10 months, sold for $960 or 403c/kg.
The Cobungra weaned Hereford heifers, 179kg, 8-9 months, returned 444c/kg or $795, while the Black Baldy heifers, 183kg, sold for $780 or 426c/kg.
The September-October drop, Yavenvale blood, EU accredited Hereford steers from Milbis sold for 431-433c/kg or $880-$885, and averaged 204kg.
Landmark Wangaratta auctioneer Daniel Fischer said the steers and heifers were all snapped up by South Australian backgrounders.
Mr Fischer said there was strong pre-sale interest, ranging from central NSW to the Victorian high country.
“They sold well above our expectations – we were thinking 400-420c/kg.
“Going on the market prices at Mt Gambier yesterday where 700kg bullocks sold for 378c/kg is a good indication of where the market is going.
“The entire draft of steers averaged 444c/kg and the 444c/kg for Hereford heifers as pretty good.’’
The heifer price came close to breaking the national record for the breed of 446c/kg achieved at Wodonga on February 11.
