Beef production field day to focus on new producers

CalvesNew and prospective producers can learn about how to establish a successful beef enterprise at an information session being delivered by Hunter Local Land Services next month.

Emerging producers have a valuable opportunity to learn about the basics of beef production and their role in protecting the region’s agricultural industry at the New Landholder Day, to be held in Wingham from 9.30am – 3pm on Friday, 19 August.

District veterinarian Dr Lyndell Stone said the free event is aimed at farmers who are new to beef production and will cover everything from enterprise options to stock handling and yard design.

“New and small landholders are an important part of our region’s economic diversity. They are valued contributors to a healthy landscape often bringing a fresh perspective and off farm skills and resources to farming,” Dr Stone said.

“We are committed to supporting local producers to build and maintain robust, sustainable enterprises within our robust livestock industry.

“Cattle prices are the highest they have been in 30 years. This is an ideal time for new beef producers to be considering options for their enterprise,” she said.

The event will cover enterprise options; pastures basics and suitable stocking rates; safe stock handling; livestock health, welfare and biosecurity; protecting a herd from pests and diseases; livestock markets; and yard design.

“There is a wealth of information about biosecurity and animal health available which can be overwhelming for new producers. This event will provide producers with introductory information to assist them in starting and running a beef enterprise,” Dr Stone said.

Attendees will also learn about their role in protecting the agricultural industry from biosecurity threats, including their responsibilities around Property Identification Codes and the National Livestock Identification System.

“The beef industry is a major contributor to our region’s agricultural production, generating more than $370 million annually,” Dr Stone said.
