Twenty two year old keen shorthorn breeder James Pitchford from Jupiter Creek shorthorns Echunga was the winner of the senior herdsman and major prize of a three month scholarship to North America at the annual all breeds SA Junior Heifer expo.
Shorthorn youth achieved outstanding success with twenty two keen young shorthorn handlers aged from eight to twenty three years attending from July 18 -21st at Adelaide showground.
There were fourteen breeds represented with 190 competitors attending from all states of Aust.
An extensive educational program was held on day one with speakers sharing their knowledge on topics such as lot feeding, butchering, scanning, marketing and nutrition as well as cattle handling.
A great line up of 18 shorthorn heifers and four steers gained two firsts, three seconds, four thirds and four merit awards.
Highlights included the presentation of junior champion handler to nine year old Dougal Ashby at his first heifer expo and junior champion heifer (Windsor Cherry Rock) to Georgie Golding.
Heifers and steers were judged by Scott Ferguson from Qld and the handlers by Krystelle Ridley from Condobolin.
Shorthorn handlers gained three firsts, three seconds, one third, five merit and three novice awards.
