Gippsland steer finishers competed strongly on Hereford weaner and yearling steers today at Bairnsdale, with prices hitting 446c/kg.
Bairnsdale & Associated Agents yarded mixed sex weaners, unjoined heifers, and cows and calves for the August 26 sale.
Heavier cattle sold to slightly easier rates than last week’s Greenwood Livestock sale, while the lighter cattle sold to a dearer trend, with buyers from as far north as Tamworth.
A feature line of Nuniong, Basford and Newcomen blood weaners was offered by Geoff and Patricia Brown, Kent Park, Mt Taylor.
The top pen of 9-11 month old steers weighed 296kg and sold for $1310 or 442c/kg, while the seconds, 269kg, returned 446c/kg or $1220.
Penned at the front of the sale were heavy Black Baldy steers from the Estate of A. Norman and selling for the sale top of $1890.
B.A. Martin offered a pen of grown Hereford steers, 406kg, for 374c/kg or $1520, with the seconds, 385kg, returning 379c/kg or $1460.
Neil Henderson also sold heavy purebred steers, 416kg, for 396c/kg or $1650.

Trent Anderson, St Katherine’s, Darriman, sold his top pen of steers, 483kg, for 356c/kg or $1720, and the seconds at 405kg for $1590 or 392c/kg.
Charlie Commins sold yearling steers, 15-18 months, dehorned, and weighing 417kg for 390c/kg or $1630. The seconds weighed 353kg and made $1390 or 393c/kg.
Bluey Commins, Nuniong Herefords, Ensay, offered a run of 12-month-old dehorned steers, with his top pen at 364kg selling for 401c/kg or $1460.
The seconds, weighing 342kg, returned $1380 or 403c/kg with the lighter calves, 270kg, making 440c/kg or $1190.
Black Baldy steers, 543kg, from Sandy Camp fetched 346c/kg or $1880.
