Merino and light lambs up in price at markets

Wagga-sheep-10At the close of Thursday’s markets the eastern states restocker lamb indicator settled 4¢ lower, at 616¢/kg cwt

  • Merino lambs were up 3¢, to 540¢/kg cwt
  • Light lambs were up 1¢, on 575¢/kg cwt
  • Trade lambs were back 6¢, to 549¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy lambs eased 7¢, to 539¢/kg cwt
  • The mutton indicator settled 2¢ dearer, at 359¢/kg cwt

This week at Wagga, lamb consignments increased 22% to 33,000 head. Quality improved this week, with the bulk of the offering made up of trade and heavy weights and new season sections remaining mostly subdued in price. Export buyers competed strongly, while a smaller group of domestic processors were in attendance, with several southern orders absent from the trade market.

Sheep numbers increased 17%, to 7,000 head. A very good quality offering of mutton was penned this week, with heavy ewes well represented.
