Shorthorn breed honoured by restaurant diners

Shorthorn-8The Shorthorn breed has received a trophy from one of Brisbane’s largest and best known steak dining establishments, the historic Norman Hotel.

Whilst the Shorthorn breed has won more than its fair share of trophies over its 216-year history, this award was particularly significant and important because of the judges; the restaurant diners themselves.

The 127 year-old Norman Hotel, an iconic Brisbane steak house, with a seating capacity of 800 diners, ran its annual “You be the Judge” promotion this October, offering beef from four different breeds for diners to taste and vote upon. JBS Australia’s Thousand Guineas Shorthorn brand represented the Shorthorn breed.

Product from each breed met a common specification for days on feed, carcass weight and ageing regime, whilst diners judged their steaks based on industry standard variables including tenderness, juiciness, flavour and overall liking. Diners were also served the same cut from each of the four breeds; rib eye fillets.

Executive Chef at The Norman Hotel, Mr. Frank Correnti, said that in addition to winning the competition, diners comments on the competition entry forms were extremely positive.

Product is available for viewing in a chilled glass display cabinet in the restaurant with Thousand Guineas standing out for its marbling, meat colour and general appearance.

“It just looks appealing”, Mr. Correnti said.

The award is the second for the young thousand Guineas brand in the past few months, after Thousand Guineas was also awarded a Silver Medal at the recent 2016 Sydney Fine Foods awards. Internationally, Shorthorn product was also awarded 2 Gold medals in the 2016 World Steak Challenge, held in London’s Hyde Park

Thousand Guineas will continue to be served at The Norman Hotel this month and will also have an opportunity to defend its title in next years “You be the Judge” competition. For anyone heading to Brisbane, make sure you call in at The Norman Hotel, and judge for yourself.
