Mt Widderin dispersal tops at $2600 and steers hit 502c/kg

Geoff and Di Norman will offer the last of their Mt Widderin steers at Hamilton in January.

As selling centres wind down for the Christmas break, Hereford breeders topped at $2600 and whiteface steers hit 502c/kg in markets last week.

The highlight for the week was the dispersal of Geoff and Di Notman’s Mt Widderin commercial herd at Skipton, Vic.

The European Union accredited herd, ranging from 2009-drop cows to 2016-drop weaned heifers, was offered on AuctionsPlus on Friday, December 16.

The 2016 drop heifers, 8-9 months, 368kg, sold for 391-394c/kg or $1440-$1450.

PTIC heifers, 20 to 21 months, sold to a top of $2340 while PTIC first calf heifers to $2600.

Joined cows, four years and over, sold from $2160 to a top of $2460.

At the CTLX Carcoar, NSW, Hereford steer weaners, under 200kg, hit a top of 426c/kg or $780 while heavier steers, 200-280kg, sold to 408c/kg and Black Baldies to 502c/kg.

Hereford steers, 280-330kg, made to 398c/kg or $1130.

Purebred and Black Baldy heifer weaners, under 200kg, sold to 400c/kg while those weighing 200-280kg topped at 361c/kg for Herefords and 406c/kg for Black Baldies.

Yearling Hereford steers made 384c/kg and yearling heifers, under 330kg, fetched 334c/kg, and heavier pens, 330-400kg, 355c/kg.

Hereford cows with calves, under two months, sold to $2200 and those with calves two to four months, $1975.

In Victorian results, yearling steers, 380kg, from Rosedale, sold for 373c/kg or $1420 and the heifer portion, 393kg, made $1380 or 351c/kg.

Station mated cows, 4-8 years, with calves, from Port Fairy, fetched $1930.

Don Cameron & Sons, Bowna, sold purebred steers in the final store sale at Wodonga, weighing 290kg, for $1250 or 431c/kg.

Beloka Pastoral Co, Benambra, sold heifers, 380kg, for $1180 at Wodonga.

In Queensland results, backgrounder steers, 9-16 months, 292kg, from Hannaford, returned 349c/kg or $1020 on AuctionsPlus.

Feeder heifers, 15-20 months, 372kg, from St George, made $1165 and unjoined cows, 5-10 years, with calves, sold for $1825.

PTIC Hereford heifers from Tarpeena, South Australia, 20-22 months, sold for $1750 on-line.

Western Australian markets have been active with feature heifer sales. Robert Kirkham, Coolup, toped the Boyanup sale with PTIC heifers at $1560.

In Black Baldy results, backgrounder steers, 303kg, from Bombala, NSW, sold for 366c/kg or $1110, and heifer portion, 283kg, made $1015.

Station mated Black Baldy cows, four to eight years, with calves, from Port Fairy, Vic, sold for $1910.

EU accredited Simmental-Hereford cross steers sold to $1475 and averaged $1347 for L Johnson & Son at Naracoorte. A Hill and M Waters, Lake Mundi, sold EU Black Baldy steers to $1483 and average of $1374 also at Naracoorte.

In over the hooks results, the Younger family, Inverell, NSW, sold a line of 56 grass fed Hereford steers, aged 24 months, and averaging 343kg carcase weight, for an average of $2195 to Wingham Beef Exports.

The consignment achieved 100 per cent MSA compliance, with an average MSA Index of 61.4, average fat depth of 17mm and 100 per cent of the carcases graded marble score one to three.

Over the Christmas period, several drafts of F1 vealer Hereford-Friesian mothers will be offered at the South West Victorian Livestock Exchange at Warrnambool on December 28.

They range from unjoined yearling heifers to heifers, 2.5 years, either PTIC or calved to a Limousin bull.
