Via ‘SA Brands’, producers can also receive news and updates from Livestock SA and connect with other livestock owners registered on the platform.
South Australian livestock producers are the first in the nation to have access to a ‘brand’ recording app thanks to a collaboration between the State Government and Livestock SA.
‘SA Brands’ allows producers to simply register their livestock brands via the app – maintaining their visible animal identifiers as well as the “ear tagging” of animals, which the national livestock identification system (NLIS) requires.
It also gives producers the ability to report lost or stolen livestock – and assist with tracking them down.
The South Australian Government worked closely with Livestock SA members to develop the SA Brands app, which was officially launched by the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Fisheries Leon Bignell at the Growing SA Conference in Hahndorf today.
Via ‘SA Brands’, producers can also receive news and updates from Livestock SA and connect with other livestock owners registered on the platform.
On 1 January 2016, the Brands Act 1933 was repealed and replaced with the National Livestock Identification Scheme (NLIS) and Property Identification Codes (PIC) which are now used in tracing livestock ownership and movements, especially in livestock disease surveillance and emergencies such as bushfires.
Following the repeal, Livestock SA members suggested livestock brands and earmarks could be retained in some form to aid in the investigation of stock theft and identification of stray stock – particularly if NLIS ear tags were lost or removed.
