The Shorthorn steer, called Southcote Jackpot Johnny, was exhibited to champion carcass by the Mount Compass Area School in the 2017 Led Steer competition at this years Royal Adelaide Show.
Entered in class 507 School Steer Heavy Domestic Class 501 – 530 kg, Jackpot Johnny was also a class winner on the hoof, after judge Ben Davies cast his experienced eye over the class.
The Export Carcass class is for steers with a carcass weight above 300 kgs and this year that class alone had 53 entries for the prestigious competition.
Jackpot Johnny measured a 530 kg live weight and a 308 kg HSCW for a Dressing Percentage of 58.1%. With 14mm P8 and 10 mm rib fats, the Shorthorn steer also measured a 110 Ossification, 390 MSA Marbling and a 63.38 MSA Index score.
With an overall score of 89.38, Jackpot Johnny finished second overall, just 1.24 points behind the Grand Champion Carcass steer, a Limousin entry from Thomas Spence, Mandayen Spences Fred.
Jackpot Johnny was part of the Shorthorn led steer 3 head team competition, which includes points for judging on the hoof with carcass results.
After posting the highest aggregate carcass points at 245.48, the Shorthorn team finished third overall when the live judging points were added.
The other 2 Shorthorn steers, exhibit 22 from HG Thompson and Sons and exhibit 25 from S & A Johnson, scored overall points of 71.83 and 84.27 respectively.
