Richard Ham of Tataila Shorthorns, Moama, received a standing ovation when he was presented a Life Membership Award to Shorthorn Beef by Shorthorn Beef President Mathew Ashby this month.
Mr Ashby pointed out that Richard had been nominated by several members who had served as Directors of Shorthorn Beef with Richard.
Richard is a long running stalwart not only for the Shorthorn breed but the overall beef industry. His long list of donated time and dedication to many various Shorthorn groups and beef industry organisations is hard to top.
Richard commenced exhibiting cattle back in the 1990’s and became a member of the Vic SB Branch. This was the start of his generous donation of time to the Shorthorn breed.
For the Victorian Branch Richard held the position of President from 2002 to 2007 and still remains a strong supporter of the group. He was also a foundation member of the Southern Shorthorn Promotions Group from the early 2000’s.
In 2008 Richard was elected to the Shorthorn Beef board where he remained a director till 2015, holding the positions of Director, Treasurer and President during the years of 2010 to 2012.
Richard and his family run Tataila Shorthorns as a part of a 5thgeneration of the Ham family’s mixed farming enterprise near Moama in Southern NSW. The enterprise spans more than 2,000 hectares across 3 properties, with operations in both sheep and cropping as well as the Shorthorn herd.
The Tataila Stud sells bulls throughout Victoria, NSW and South Australia with bulls going as far afield as the Northern Territory. Richard and his family have also been long time supporters of the National Shorthorn Show and Sale.
Commercially, the Ham family join mainly Shorthorn breeders to Shorthorn and Angus bulls, with the turnoff largely supplying the feeder market.
Richard Ham is well known throughout the Shorthorn breed and much respected for his passion and dedication as well as his selfless approach to furthering the interests of Shorthorn cattle and the Shorthorn breed. He is a deserved recipient of the Shorthorn Beef Life Membership award.
