Believed to be the oldest continuous running multi-vendor bull sale in South Australia, the Naracoorte Shorthorn sale has gone from strength to strength since the advent of an unled forum in 2015.
This year’s sale saw 6 Shorthorn vendors from South Australia and Victoria offer 37 high performance Shorthorn bulls. With a clearance rate of 95%, 35 bulls sold in total for an outstanding average of $6,828.
Top priced bull was lot 6, Bayview Winston N24, selling for $17,500 to WA based Liberty Charolais & Shorthorns studs, Toodyay.
Liberty stud principals Kevin and Robin Yost, who were bidding over the phone through Elders stud stock marketing manager Tom Penna. Mr Penna described Bayview Winstonas a “true stud sire”.
Liberty established its Shorthorn stud four years ago and next month will offer its first Shorthorn and Charolais-Shorthorn bulls in their annual yearling sale at Muchea Livestock Selling Complex, WA.
“It is hard to find bulls with that softness, muscle pattern and depth. He is a bull that will do a lot of good for us,” Mr Yost said.
Winston N24 is in the top 1 per cent for scrotal and top 20pc for all indexes. He also had an eye muscle scan of 131 square centimetres.
The Bayview stud also secured the second highest price of $11,000 for lot 9, Bayview Bourbon N49. Bourbon N49 sold to long-time sale supporter, Delro-Alaman, Woolumbool.
In total, Bayview sold seven of its eight bulls for a $8786 average.
“It was a very solid sale in trying times,” Bayview stud principal Chris Thompson said.
Vic breeders the Brook family, Eloora stud, Bulart, were also among the high prices with their five bulls averaging $7800.
This included an impressive roan bull, Eloora Hummer N43, which sold for $10,000 to Artimore and Partners, Culburra.
Five impressive sons of Yamburgan Zeus H140 sold well for the Williamson family, Caskieben stud, Carisbrook, Vic. They topped at $8500 and averaged $7600 for their draft.
Wynyard Shorthorns offered and sold 6 Shorthorn bulls to a top of $8,000 twice and an average of $6,833.
The Ashby family, Bundaleer stud, Gulnare, averaged $5000 for their nine of 10 bulls to sell and Lyn and John Nitschke, Carlton stud, Hahndorf and Padthaway, sold their three bulls to a $6000 high.
Four buyers took home four bulls or more underpinning the sale’s success.
Leading the volume buyer list was PR Gould & Co, Cortina, Greenways, who bought five of the six bulls offered by Wynyard Shorthorns for a $7000 average.
Landmark and Elders conducted the sale with Landmark’s Richard Miller the auctioneer.
“It was an outstanding result on a fantastic line-up of Shorthorn bulls with the type and maturity pattern being spot on for the beef industry’s needs,” Mr Miller said.
“The high performing Breedplan figures backed up the phenotype of the bulls all day too.”
