Heifers down in price but cows and calves up

Cows-&-calves-EvertonCow and calf units last week saw 1,441 head offered on AuctionsPlus, with clearance remaining strong at 70% and an increase of $23 seen.
Prices ranged from $510 to $1,860 to average $1,133.
The top price was achieved by a line of 15 Angus cows and calves (pictured), A/c ‘J H McInnes’, Everton, VIC.
The cows are 2 years old, pure Ardrossan Blood and have 2-8 week old calves at foot. Other highlights include a line of rising 4 year old Angus cows with calves at foot return $1,500, from Bingara, NSW which are heading to a buyer in Southern Queensland.
‘Glenfern Investments Pty Ltd’ from Forbes, NSW offered 4 lines of Te Mania Angus blood cows and calves. The younger 3-4 year old cows sold for $2,100 and the older lines sold for $1,900 and $1,950 respectively.
Looking to the west, in the WA cattle sale a line of Angus/Friesian mixed sex yearlings from Northcliffe sold for $980. They are 12-14 months old and weigh 349kgs. In Pemberton, 64 Angus mixed sex yearlings made 542c/kg dressed. They weigh 463kgs and are 14-16 months old.
Light steers under 200kgs averaged 306c, down 3c on last week. A line of 6-10 month old Shorthorn steers, weighing 159kgs, from Warren, NSW returned the top price of 339c.
Prices for steers weighing 200-280kgs were also down on last week, averaging 287c, a drop of 9c. The top price of 339c went to a line of 37 Angus weaned steers, A/c ‘N G Pollard’ from Book Book, NSW weighing 236kgs.
Another highlight includes 11-12 month old Angus backgrounder steers from Avoca, TAS, offered over 2 lots which weigh 267kgs and sold for 332c.
Heavier steers weighing between 280 – 330kgs averaged 301c and ranged from 277c to 333c. The top price went to a line of 12-13 month old Angus steers, A/c ‘OA & SC Smith’ from Legerwood, TAS. The steers weigh 311kgs and  are Quarterway and Chale Angus blood.
Looking to Victoria, 70 Angus weaned steers from Stonyford, VIC sold for 314c. The steers are 13-14 months old and weigh 297kgs. Heavier steers weighing 330 – 400kgs averaged 300c and ranged from 260c to 326c.
The top price was for a line of 12-13 month old Angus yearling steers from Grassmere, VIC. Another highlight includes 61 Shorthorn weaned steers from Wombat, NSW. The steers are 9-12 months old and weigh 333kgs.
Light heifers under 200kgs averaged 249c and ranged from 220c to 274c. The top price went to a line of 6-10 month old Shorthorn heifers, weighing 171kgs offered by A/c ‘PT & RM McLellan’ from Warren, NSW.
Heifers weighing 200-280kgs averaged 235c and ranged from 187c to 307c. The top price went to 20 Angus backgrounder heifers from Bridport, TAS. These heifers are aged 11-12 months, weigh 243kgs and are Quarterway Angus blood.
Heifers weighing 280-330kgs averaged 269c, down 1c on last week. The top price went to a line of 81 Angus X feeder heifers from Tenterfield, NSW which sold for 287c.
The heifers are aged 18-22 months, weigh 311kgs and are heading to a buyer in Gippsland, VIC. Another highlight includes 12-14 month old Angus heifers from Merriwa, NSW, which weigh 284kgs return 274c.
Heavier heifers weighing 330-400kgs averaged 281c and ranged from 262c to 308c. The top price went to a line of Charolais X weaned heifers from Pipers River, TAS. The heifers are 11-12 months old and weigh 309kgs.
