Grassfed market continues to draw buyer interest

These steers from Gladstone, Tasmania, sold for 328c/kg.

The grass-fed and antibiotic-free markets continue to attract buyer interest, as most of this weeks top prices were animals accredited under these schemes.

Inclusive of this highlight run of 549 head from Gladstone, Tasmania A/c ‘Barrhead Pty Ltd’.

The tops of both their steers and heifers returned price in their respective categories. Their 11-12 month, 271kg steers returned 328c/kg and the 289kg heifers of the same drop returned 298c.

Cow and calf units made up the majority offering in the Eastern States Cattle Sale, comprising 85% of the AuctionsPlus catalogue.

Selling from $755 to a top of $1,920 and averaging $1,316, up $83 on last week. The top price was returned by a line of Injemira blood NSM Poll Hereford heifers from Holbrook, NSW.

These heifers are rising 3 years old, with 57 June/July drop calves at foot, sired by Injemira Redford bulls.

Light steers under 200kgs sold from 258c to 314c to average 296c, down 2c on last week. The top price was returned by 92 Angus cross steers from Yetman, NSW.

These weaners are 6-8 months old, weighing 145kgs and will travel to Wagga Wagga, NSW. Steers weighing 280-330kgs sold from 240c to 335c, and averaged 305c, down 3c on last week. 61 Angus & Angus Hereford steers from Highlands, VIC returned the top price. These steers are 12-13 months, weigh 326kgs and will travel to Geelong, VIC.

Heavier steers weighing over 330kgs sold from 194c to 341c to average 301c, down 3c on last week.

The top price was returned by 94 Angus yearlings from Cooma, NSW. These steers are 11-12 months and weigh 356kgs.

One line of heavier Droughmaster feeder steers from Cunnamulla, QLD returned 260c or $1,090. These steers are 15-27 months old and weigh 419kgs and were secured by a QLD feedlot buyer.

Light heifers under 200kgs sold from 250c to 280c to average 266c, up 18c on last week.

The top price was returned by 88 Angus & Angus/Hereford heifers from Uralla, NSW. Aged 12-13 months and weighing 178kgs, these heifers will travel to Boggabri, NSW.

Heifers weighing 200-280kgs sold from 225c to 259c to average 238c, up only 2c on last week. The top price was returned by a small line of Angus weaners, aged 9-10 months, weighing 216kgs from Cooma, NSW.

Heifers heavier than 330kgs sold from 215c to 294c, averaging 277c, firm on last week. The top price was returned by 68 Charlaios cross feeder heifers from Merriwa, NSW. These heifers are aged 13-15 months, weighing 357kgs and will travel to Dingee, VIC.
