Duncan appointed to manage river systems

Darling-RiverPhil Duncan will become the first Aboriginal Australian to lead the Murray-Darling’s Basin Community Committee after the Murray-Darling Basin Authority Board appointed him for a three-year term.

The independent body is made up of Basin community members representing an extensive network of stakeholders and advising Government on community matters.

Minister for Water Resources David Littleproud congratulated the MDBA Board for making the appointment.

“This shows the value First Australians bring to managing our rivers,” Minister Littleproud said.

“Phil Duncan is a highly respected Gomeroi man with more than 35 years’ experience consulting the community and providing advice to government.

“Phil has held a number of senior roles, including setting up the Strategic Policy and Planning Unit at the NSW Aboriginal Land Council and managing the NSW Indigenous fishing strategy.

“I’m confident Phil will strengthen the advice and guidance the committee provides to the Murray-Darling Basin Authority.

“I want strong community relationships and look forward to working with Phil.

“Grassroots feedback is vital in making sure the Basin Plan works for everyone.

“Can I also acknowledge outgoing chair Rory Treweeke who has led the panel with distinction.

“The MDBA is boosting its regional presence and by 2021 will have five regional offices from Goondiwindi to Murray Bridge.
