Phil was a tremendous supporter of the Shorthorn breed in Western Australia, both as principal of the successful Crathes Park Shorthorn stud and also as President of the Western Australia branch of Shorthorn Beef.
Crathes Park Shorthorns enjoyed many successes, mostly recently including yearling sons of the AI sire, Crathes Park Hastings H42 selling to a top of $22,000 at the annual Futurity Shorthorn bull sale in 2019.
Phil also worked tirelessly towards developing the Shorthorn breeds presence at the Perth Royal Show, with several females from the Crathes Park herd receiving numerous accolades. Phil would often sell or lend many of his top heifers to ensure that the Shorthorn breed had a presence, but also to support both young and upcoming Shorthorn breeders.
Phil supported the wider community, including donating a charity steer to the Black Dog Charity Ride, which was taken to schools and worksites to help spread a positive message about depression. The steer, known as Winston, was later auctioned for the charity, raising $7,000 to support the worthy cause.
Phil’s dedication and passion extended beyond the Shorthorn breed and into every aspect of his life. He will be dearly missed by all that had the pleasure of knowing him.
