Selection may not come down to the next “hot” bull

Dick-Whale

In 1997 Dick joined Elders as the Value Based Marketing Manager until in 2004 when he started his current business as Genetics Consultant to the Beef Industry.

Cattle consultant Dick Whale will speak on selecting the next generation of profitable cattle this month at Young, NSW.

Topics to be discussed will be future  breeding strategies, heifer selection, and breed trait desirability selection tier one and two preferences.

Industry preference may not be influenced by the next “hot” bull.

Mr Dick Whale started his career as Manager, Research Herd at the Department of Agriculture, Trangie which ran 400 cows.

In 1985 Dick won the National Judging Competition which gave him a scholarship to attend the University of Illinois  where he studied Meat Science.

He joined the ICM Feed Lot as Livestock Manager where he stayed for 11 years.

The feed lot when he arrived consisted of 1400 cattle and after his first year contained 27,000 head. When he left, the company had 44, 000 cattle on feed.  Dick handled and assessed every animal during his time there.

In 1997 Dick joined Elders as the Value Based Marketing Manager until in 2004 when he started his current business as Genetics Consultant to the Beef Industry.
