Following a successful introduction into the Taiwan market in September last year, Mort & Co is now supplying its The Phoenix F1-F3 Wagyu direct into the country.
General Manager of Meat Sales, Brett Williams, says the partnership started with supply via air freight of 1300 kilograms but has quickly increased in a few short months.
“Mort & Co’s business into Taiwan has exceeded our initial expectations. On top of that 1300 kilograms, we are now supplying an additional sea freight container of 11000kgs. It means we are supplying two air freight shipments along with one sea freight shipment every month.”
The volume equates to approximately 150 head of Wagyu cattle per month, and it seems that’s just the beginning.
“The indication from the buyer is to further increase supply, covering a range of marbling scores and products,” says Mr Williams. “Of course, we are thrilled with the partnership and look forward to further growth in Taiwan – as with all of our markets.”
The partnership has been well supported by the New Market Program (NMP) with Trade Investment Queensland, assisting the Mort & Co team to meet marketing needs on the ground in Taiwan.
According to Meat Livestock Australia (MLA) Taiwan has very small levels of local beef production, and depends on international suppliers for support.
“Beef imports currently account for 96% of Taiwanese beef consumptions, with forecasts indicating this figure will remain unchanged for the foreseeable future.” (Market News; MLA 2020)
Mort & Co is hopeful that the partnership will lead to the company’s other brands, Master Selection (Purebred Wagyu) and Grandchester (Black Angus), being exported into Taiwan in the future.
