The Trans Tasman Travel Bursary, sponsored by the New England Travel Centre and the Angus Australia Foundation, provides an opportunity for a young person to observe the New Zealand beef industry. Applications are now open for the 2023 bursary opportunity.
Offered annually, the Trans Tasman Travel Bursary provides an Angus Australia member aged between 18 and 30 years the means to travel around New Zealand for the purpose of engaging in and experiencing beef production systems and the agricultural industry of our international counterparts across the ditch.
Angus Australia Extension Manager Jake Phillips understands the impact that the Trans Tasman Bursary holds for a young person in the industry, having been a past recipient of the award himself.
“The Angus breed is not just Australia’s breed; it is a choice breed for producers around the world with its consistent performance in a range of markets. While the Angus breed is one size that fits most, what differs is the beef production systems they are featured in around the world,” said Mr Phillips.
“The Trans Tasman Bursary provides a young person the opportunity to experience the beef industry in a different context to Australia, which can be an eye opening and invaluable perspective. Not only are they getting a practical on farm understanding of this through their tour, but they are also extending their network internationally and gaining relationships that may assist their personal and professional development into the future.”
The bursary covers return airfares for the recipient to travel to New Zealand, $2,000 spending money and assistance to organize a tour to various seedstock and commercial breeders across the country.
“The bursary provides the opportunity to connect with enterprises and companies to gain insight into their operation, which you wouldn’t generally receive if you were to travel to New Zealand on your own accord,” said 2019 bursary recipient Chloe Gould.
“Everyone that I approached throughout my travels, both stud and commercial, were so open to hosting and providing insight to their operation.”
The Angus Australia network of staff, members and affiliated groups can provide assistance and insight to develop a tour to the recipient’s interest.
Applications for the Trans Tasman Travel Bursary will open December 18, 2022 and will close February 2, 2023.
