Angus Australia members aged 18 to 30 with an interest in the feedlot industry are encouraged to apply for the Angus Foundation SmartBeef Scholarships.
The Angus Foundation will once again award two scholarships to give these members the opportunity to participate in the Australian Lot Feeder’s Association’s (ALFA) SmartBeef Conference.
SmartBeef is the grain fed beef industry’s technical conference run each alternate year to BeefEx. The 2023 event will be hosted in Tamworth, NSW, on 11-12th October and will draw together feedlot operators and their staff, nutritionists, veterinarians, regulators, service providers and others involved in the grain fed beef supply chain.
With a theme of ‘Smarter, Richer Beef’, a diverse cohort of leading speakers from across the whole supply chain will present to participants.
Angus Australia Extension Officer Nancy Crawshaw encourages any Angus Australia members aged between 18 and 30 with an interest in learning more about the feedlotting industry to apply for the scholarship opportunity.
“SmartBeef attracts delegates from around the country for a celebration and showcase of the sector. Delegates walk away from this event informed, inspired, motivated and even better connected with their industry peers,” she said.
“The SmartBeef Conference is an event not to be missed for those members with an interest in the grain feeding cattle industry and we are proud to facilitate the opportunity to have our young Angus members there to learn from some of the best in the industry.”
The scholarships aim to increase the recipient’s knowledge of the Australian feedlotting industry and the beef industry as a whole, allow recipients the opportunity to network with industry professionals and develop the recipient’s personal skills.
In reflection of her time at the BeefEx conference (run in alternate years by ALFA) in 2022, the 2022 Angus Foundation BeefEx scholarship recipient Georgia Laurie praised her experience at the ALFA conference.
“The events provide provide a platform to meet people of all calibres and levels of involvement in the feed lotting industry. As a producer of Angus steers, it emphasised the role that feedlots have in the beef industry and the level of expertise that goes into turning our 460kg steer into a fully finished product in the most efficient way,” she said.
“I encourage all youth members to apply for this as we all must understand the whole beef supply chain to the best of our ability- it doesn’t end when the cattle leave the property.”
