Angus Australia is pleased to announce that applications are now open for the 2024 Kansas State University Scholarship, which is making its return to the scholarships, awards and bursaries program for the first time since 2019.
Angus Australia is excited to bring back this scholarship, sponsored by the Angus Foundation, which provides opportunity for a young beef cattle enthusiast the chance to study at one of the best agricultural universities in the USA.
The Kansas State University Scholarship provides an Angus member with the opportunity to study at Kansas State University for one semester (US Spring Semester, January through to April/May).
Beef cattle are a key focus of study at Kansas State University (K State) and with their own seedstock and commercial herd, feedlot, feed mill, brilliant teaching facilities and staff, the university offers an exceptional learning environment.
In addition to the on-campus study and events, the scholar will have the opportunity to experience parts of the US beef supply chain from leading seedstock operations, cow calf operations through to feedlots and the end supply chain. The program can be tailored to the applicant’s particular interest to take in the best parts of the Kansas and more broadly the national beef industry by attending leading events and organisations.
The scholarship is open to any young beef cattle enthusiasts wanting to increase their knowledge of all facets of the beef industry. To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must be between 21 and 30 years of age and a current financial member of Angus Australia.
Angus Australia Extension Manager Jake Phillips encourages any young person who is eligible and has an interest in investigating the beef industry on a global basis to apply for the scholarship.
“Not only does this scholarship represent a once in a lifetime opportunity for the recipient, but it also provides the recipient with $15,000 to cover the costs of attending K State,” said Jake.
Long time collaborator with Angus Australia to facilitate the scholarship opportunity Dr Dan Moser, Associate Dean of Academic Programs, K State, said “The Angus Australia Kansas State University Scholarship is a unique opportunity for a young person to experience the United States beef production supply chain from seedstock production and commercial cow-calf production to grass-based and grain-based cattle feeding, as well as processing and retail marketing.”
“The scholar will have the opportunity to attend courses of their choosing on a non-credit basis at no additional cost. They can participate in student activities and will have the opportunity to travel both within the state of Kansas and nationally where they can attend regional and national cattle industry events,” he said.
“They’ll also participate in the Kansas State University annual Legacy bull sale.”
The most recent recipient of the K State University Scholarship was Rebecca George, who after winning the scholarship in 2019, was finally able to take up the opportunity in 2023 following travel delays due to COVID-19.
“I really enjoyed being able to share my experiences in agriculture and about Australian production systems. I’ve been able to enjoy many American college experiences such as the K State Rodeo, a baseball home game and a Super Bowl watch party,” said Rebecca.
“Being able to immerse myself in student life in the Midwest is an experience I will always be grateful for. During my time in the US, I have also had several opportunities to experience the US beef industry by visiting a bull sale, The National Western Stock Show and a visit to the American Angus Association.”
“Experiencing an industry, that I hold a lot of passion for, internationally will always be a privilege and I am thankful for everyone who has taken the time to share their experiences with me.”
