Downlands College student, Georgia Lynch, has kicked off her first Beef Australia experience by taking out top honours in the Nutrien Ag Solutions Young Commercial Judges competition.
The Year 11 student, who said she was over the moon to win against such tough competition, first took out the 16 years & under age group, before being named overall champion.
“It was a really great experience and I’m very appreciative that I had this opportunity,” Georgia said.
“It was pretty nerve-wracking; I went up there and had a speech prepared, then decided to scrap it because there’s nothing worse than having a speech and messing it up, so I thought I might as well speak on what’s in front of me and go off what I know.
“I’m just over the moon that I’ve won.”
Raised on a beef property at Crows Nest where her family runs a Santa Gertrudis/Limousin-cross herd, Georgia is the Downlands College Cattle Show Ambassador and has been involved in the school’s show team since Year Five.
“It’s a pretty big thing to come here and win, and try to show some kids that you can do a lot if you put the time and effort in, so I’m pretty proud.”
Overjudge Jim Hutchinson said the calibre of young judges that lined up in the 2024 competition was outstanding.
“The pre-work that’s gone into it, learning what it’s all about, right from the youngest ones to the young adults is fantastic,” Mr Hutchinson said.
“It was super close, and a lot of the classes could have gone several different ways.”
Mr Hutchinson said the competition was a wonderful opportunity for the next generation of the beef industry.
“It’s hugely important for them to get involved in industry and understand what the profit drivers are, the commercially-relevant facts and what industry wants in terms of what cattle are sought after,” he said.
