Almost a full $1kg gap between a young steer and heifer with steers leading the charge

As Spring is now upon us, most producers are seeking out where markets are heading and anticipating where the year might finish up.

Most of NSW, QLD & the Territory are now looking good to very good, while VIC is patchy and SA is pretty ordinary.

Weather as always will be a key factor as Spring rolls out, with the timing of warm weather and or continued rain to obviously dictate supply numbers.

There appears to be a fair amount of producer confidence, with demand likely to remain strong over the next eight weeks as the benefits of the Spring flush and easy weight gains are maximised.

Queensland is especially active as producers seek out young cattle for backgrounding or feedlot contracts. Most store markets have shown a steady increase over the last few weeks to firm up nicely.

AuctionsPlus has also seen a steady increase in clearance rates and value over reserves. Interestingly there is nearly a full $1kg gap between a young steer and heifer with steers leading the charge.

Feedlot rates for Angus feeders are now well over $4kg, up to 500kg. Females have also strengthened with units making from $2,200-2,500 depending on breed and quality. While PTIC females are around the $2,000 mark.

Physical markets are solid enough with kill Cows 290-330c/kg, while heavy steers are 330-390c/kg & Heifers are sitting between 320-370c/kg. Direct to works consignments are also strong with approx. a 7-14 day delivery.
