World-class, reliable and efficient DNA testing solution for Wagyu

The Australian Wagyu Association (AuWA) has confirmed Weatherbys as a new genotyping provider, delivering the Weatherbys 85K SNP chip for Parent Verification, Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) and reporting of recessive conditions.

Through its proprietary genomic data, DNA parentage and genetic evaluation pipeline, the AuWA is able to deliver the most competitive and reliable genomic testing services for Wagyu breeders worldwide.

“Our systems have been developed to be open to technology providers around the world, enabling evaluation of new competitive genotype products. This ensures members have access to the best available technology at the best available price, with new standardised global genomic testing options now starting from just AUD$37 (USD $26),” said AuWA CEO, Dr Matt McDonagh.

The Weatherbys 85K chip, run on the Illumina technology platform, fully integrates with AuWA’s database, parentage and genetic evaluation systems. Testing confirms significant overlap with products offered by existing providers Neogen and Zoetis, with 99.8% concordance across common SNPs. This means different genomic products deliver the same result at an individual animal level.

In addition, known genetic condition tests that can be identified from SNP data across all three providers deliver equivalent results, ensuring consistency and accuracy regardless of chip choice.

Weatherbys Scientific Business Development Manager ANZ, Michael-John Barry, said that with a shared commitment to supporting breed improvement and producer success, the partnership with AWA marks a significant milestone for Australia’s premium beef sector.

“Weatherbys’ mission is to bring world-class, reliable and efficient DNA testing solutions to our customers and we are thrilled to be partnering with the AWA and supporting their members,” Mr Barry said.
