Eloora Shorthorns wins reserve champion in 2016 Heifer Challenge

EloonaThis years award comes on the back of some outstanding success in  the long running event for the Cavendish, Vic, based stud.

During the 5 years that the RASV Heifer Challenge has been running, Eloora Shorthorns have become the first stud to feature as finalists in 3 of those years, first winning the event in 2012.

The RASV Heifer Challenge requires studs to enter 10 registered heifers from their 2014 drop with the heifers judged on Structure, evenness and breed type.

This year their 50 entries from studs participating in the 2016 Beefweek field days. The competition is designed to showcase the future breeders available at each stud.

The overall winners came from Boonaroo Angus with judge Bob Dent remarking that “there was very little difference between the Boonaroo heifers and the Eloora Shorthorn heifers.”

The Eloora Shorthorn entry was made up of 21-22 month old, PTIC heifers, due to calve in March, predominantly sired by Eloora Baker G31 or Royalla Masterpiece 9114.

Eloora Shorthorns co-principal Dion Brook was delighted with the win, particularly on the back of a tremendously successful Beefweek field day. “The field day was excellent. We generated several sales however there was also strong interest in the sires on offer at the Naracoorte Shorthorn sale to be held at the end of March.”

Eloora Shorthorns were presented with their award at the awards dinner held last Friday night in Bendigo.
