Whiteface females take the spotlight at the 2016 Sydney Royal

The supreme champion Poll Hereford exhibit at the 2016 Sydney Royal was Cloverlee Asteret, is flanked by exhibitor Liz Ikin, Bannister, judge Gary Clarke, Tasmania, Ken Ikin, Bannister, Garry Watson and Stuart Davies, RAS councillors, and handlers Savannah Boutsiakis, Crookwell and Belinda Tarlinton, Bannister.

The feminine side of the Hereford breed shone in the whiteface classes at the 2016 Sydney Royal with females coming through the ranks to win best exhibit in the horned and polled rings.

Judge Jock Laurie, Walcha, NSW, selected Tondara Uptowns Novelty 126 as the best Hereford exhibit, and Cloverlee Asteret in the Poll Herefords from the line-ups on March 19.

Both females are now eligible for the Hereford – Miss World judging in December, 2016.

Exhibited by the Holt family, Tondara Herefords, Urana, NSW, Tondara Uptowns Novelty 126 is a February 2015 drop heifer sired by Ups Town (IMP CAN) and out of Tondara V-9 Novelty 119.

The heifer won junior and grand champion female, followed by best Hereford exhibit, after making her showring debut at Sydney.

Sophie Holt said the heifer would now be shown at Melbourne followed by the Hereford feature show at Sydney in 2018.

Mrs Holt said it was exciting to have back-to-back qualifications for the Hereford – Miss World title.

The reserve junior champion Hereford female was Avignon E1609 Dewdrop L404, shown by the Birchnell family, Avignon Herefords, Loomberah, NSW.

Tondara also exhibited the senior champion female and the junior champion’s dam, Tondara V-9 Novelty 119. Taking the reserve sash was Ashmar Maritana K038, shown by Ashmar Herefords, Gloucester, NSW.

Warragundi Beef Company, Currabubula, NSW, exhibited the junior and grand champion bull, Injemira Advance E007 K276, a 2014-drop son of Injemira Advance E007.

The reserve junior champion was Avignon Resolve, a 2015-drop son of CL 1 Domino 955W (IMP USA), and exhibited by the Avignon stud.

The senior champion Hereford bull was Beggan Hill Kingfisher K316, exhibited by Beggan Hill stud, Harden, and a 2014-drop son of Dunoon Forty Four F515.

The reserve senior champion bull was Glenholme Kilcoy shown by the Bush family, Kirraweena/Glenholme Herefords, Cootamundra.

In the polled classes, Cloverlee Asteret, exhibited by Ken and Liz Ikin, Cloverlee Poll Herefords, Bannister, NSW, stormed through the classes to win senior and grand champion female, and best Poll Hereford exhibit.

Asteret was sired by Cloverlee Hunter and is out of Tycolah Asteret D18. Reserve senior female was JTR Cherry Ripe J006 (P), sired by The Ranch Mustang and shown by JTR Cattle Company, Roslyn, NSW.

The Crowley family, Tycolah stud, Barraba, NSW, exhibited the junior champion female, Tycolah Molly Moonbeam K106, while Cloverlee Minerva L042 was sashed as reserve.

Warragundi Beef Company was also successful in the polled bull classes with Warragundi Kentucky winning the junior champion bull. Tycolah Oakwood L26, exhibited by the Tycolah stud, was selected as reserve.

The Honner family, Minlawcowie Poll Herefords, Brentwood, SA, exhibited Minlacowie Jubilant J123 to senior and grand champion bull. The October 2013-drop bull was sired by Allendale Waterloo B50 and out of Minlacowie Nikkie C77. In reserve was Warragundi Beef Company’s Johnny Reb J5.

In the interbreed, Tondara Uptowns Novelty 126 placed in the top 7 of the heifer line-up while the Poll Hereford pair placed in the top 10 in the Hordern Trophy.

Hereford youth dominated the RAS Paraders competition with Jamie Grosser, Nelsons Plains, continuing his winning ways by taking out the open paraders 19-25 years, champion open parader and the Mathew Thom Memorial Perpetual Trophy.

Piper Schillert, Gunnedah, NSW, came from the 13 and under 19 class to won the champion RAS/ASC parade, Michael Allen Memorial Perpetual Trophy, grand champion parader state final and the Patrick Keast Memorial annual prize.

Piper, 15, is a Year 10 student at Calrossy Angilcan School, Tamworth, and has been showing cattle under the tutelage of the school’s agricultural teachers for four years.

Hailing from an urban family background, Piper attended the Herefords Australia Youth National Heifer Show at Inverell in January.

“I have never won anything this big and was kind of shocked,’’ she said.

“We were judged on how we stand with the cattle, enter the ring – you have to enter the ring like you own it, be happy and enjoy what you are doing.

“I hope to definitely make a career in agriculture and work on a northern cattle station.’’

Jessica Grosser, Nelsons Plains, won the championship sash in the Beef 2016 heifer fitting challenge, with another Hereford Youth member Amy Whitechurch, Inverell, in reserve.
