Live cattle exporter Wellard is seeking Hereford bull calves for a new feedlot market in the Middle East.

Wellard is offering forward contracts and a price premium to producers of Herefords to keep their bull calves entire.

Wellard procurement officer Richard Bond said the calves would be sourced from below the blue tongue-free zone running across the continent from Broome to Alice Springs and onto Sydney.

The calves must be weaned and have a liveweight of 190-300kg.

Mr Bond said delivery points would be organised across the country.

“We have mainly concentrated on the Indonesia market but this is a new market with unlimited demand we won’t fulfil it at the moment,’’ he said.

“The bulls need to be Bos taurus and flat backed, and will go onto feed.’’

Mr Bond conceded the price had to be competitive to encourage producers not to mark calves in a buoyant store and prime markets.

Wellard will buy and take delivery of the bulls once they reach 300kg liveweight to minimise infrastructure requirements.

Historically, bull orders in northern and western Australia have attracted 20-30c/kg premium over steers.
