A young cattle enthusiast aged over 16 has the chance to win the junior ambassador award at the Queensland annual Hereford heifer show in July.
To be held at Clifton on July 1-3, the heifer show will have a panel of independent judges to interview applicants on everyday theory, practical cattle handling and industry knowledge.
The winner of the ambassador award must be involved in the Hereford breed.
Herefords Queensland Youth Association president Kate Shooter said the show would present a program packed with two days of demonstrations and information.
“There will be junior judging on the Saturday followed by junior paraders and cattle classes on the Sunday,’’ she said.
“The evening function on the Saturday will be a great opportunity for participants to network and meet new friends.
“The show is open to all young cattle handlers aged from seven to 25 years.
“When it comes to the cattle classes, bulls must between six and 16 months of age, and heifers between six and 23 months, while cows must have been shown previously as a heifer.’’
Ms Shooter said the ambassador award would be judged on general appearance, animal preparation, communication skills, leadership, participation, and interest in the breed and cattle industry.
Commercial steer and heifer classes are open to all milk tooth purebred or whiteface steers or heifers.
Futurity classes are open to females previously shown at a junior heifer show.
Participants will compete in the paraders, junior judging, public speaking and herdsman competitions, with encouragement and novice awards in each group.
General entries close on June 1 and cattle entries on June 17.
