Hereford feeder steers topped the first interfaced autumn store cattle sale held in Victoria last week.

The sale was held by Paull & Scollard at Myrtleford on May 27 and drew a yarding of 1194 head.

Hereford feeder steers, 18-20 months, averaging 507kg, from Rosewhite, Vic, topped the steer pens at $1520 or 299c/kg.

In the female offering, PTIC Hereford cows, 26-30 months and 457kg, with calves, from Whorouly, Vic, made $2000. Unjoined Black Baldy cows, five years, with calves sold for $1875.

PTIC Hereford heifers, 18-20 months, 434kg, from Buffalo River, made $1160 while dry cows, 2-3 years, sold for $840.

Among the heavy steers, 18-month-old Hereford and Hereford cross steers, 467kg, sold to $1400 or 299c/kg.

Backgrounder Black Baldy steers topped at 378c/kg or $1100 and sold down to 323c/kg.

Hereford steer weaners, 260-312kg, sold for 291-326c/kg while Black Baldy steers, 9-10 months, sold for 305-353c/kg. Unweaned mixed sex Black Baldies, 7-9 months, made 347c/kg or $1030.

In the unjoined heifers, Black Baldies, 7-10 months, sold for 285-310c/kg, or an average of $865.

Herefords topped the weaner heifer pens at $935 – purebred females aged 9-12 months made 285-308c/kg or $815-$935.

AuctionsPlus operations manager Anna Adams said 91 registered buyers had logged on for the sale.

“We had run a couple of sales in northern NSW but this was the first for Victoria,’’ Ms Adams said.

“Buyers tend to buy in the south and send them up to the north so there is lots of potential there.

“The catalogue had 3500 hits up to the completion of the sale.

“Eleven lots were purchased by on-line bidders for a total of $11,860 – they were also underbidders on quite a few lots.’’

Ms Adams said Auctionsplus was talking to livestock agents about interfacing the spring weaner sales.

“The audio stream gives real value to the people who are sitting at home as they can get a feel of the tempo of the sale and hit the button quickly to bid,’’ she said.

“We are working on a video streaming option but that is quite challenging when the action is moving.

“We hope to have that catwalk and laneway (video) experience for the southern weaner sales.’’
