Merino, light and trade lambs all up in price this week

  • The eastern states restocker lamb indicator settled on 646¢, back 10¢/kg cwt from where it closed the previous day.
  • Merino lambs were 5¢ higher on 559¢/kg cwt
  • Light lambs averaged 608¢, up 5¢/kg cwt
  • Trade lambs settled 3¢ higher, on 593¢/kg cwt
  • Heavy lambs lifted 1¢ to 590¢/kg cwt
  • The mutton indicator settled on 422¢, up 5¢/kg cwt

Numbers at CTLX Carcoar nearly halved week-on-week, with 3,975 lambs yarded. Lamb quality was mixed, with some good runs of good conditioned new season lambs offered, along with the plainer types.

The quality of old lambs was fair and most of the usual buyers were present and competing in a dearer market.

Mutton numbers were limited, with 1,225 head yarded, and prices remain strong.

  • New season light weight 2 score lambs to restockers averaged 629¢/kg cwt
  • Trade weight new season 3 score lambs were 32¢ dearer, averaging 622¢/kg cwt
  • Old light weight 2 score lambs eased 44¢ to 537¢/kg cwt
  • Medium weight 3 score Merino ewes averaged 363¢, back 34¢/kg cwt

Wet conditions hampering the movement of stock saw lamb numbers at Horsham ease 16% to 9,892 head.

Quality was very good, with a good selection of trade and heavy weight lambs yarded. The usual buying group operated in a firm to dearer market.

There were less sheep yarded with 1,470 head on offer, covering all weights and grades. Sheep sold to very strong demand and were also dearer week-on-week.

  • New season light trade weight 3 score lambs averaged 601¢ while heavier trade weights were 18¢ dearer and averaged 586¢/kg cwt
  • New season heavy 4 score lambs were 16¢, on 602¢/kg cwt
  • Medium weight 3 score Merino ewes lifted 43¢ to average 495¢/kg cwt
