A huge crowd of interested dairymen from all over Australia were at the recent Ovensdale First Stage Complete Dispersal Sale held on property at Whorouly in North East Victoria.
The Newton family have been breeding Illawarra’s for 90 years and offered the highest production herd in the Breed.
Sale top of $14,000 was paid for the recently classified EX 93 Ovensdale Rose 182, this 5 year old had produced 10340 litres 481 kgs fat and 373 kgs protein, she was purchased by the Syndicate of Matt Henry, Tara Illawarra’s and Shane Bourke of Myrtleholme Illawarra’s both of Qld.
Next high price of $7,250 was paid by R & J Gordon & Sons of Cohuna for Ovensdale Rose 173, VG a 6 year old Absolute daughter with over 400 kgs fat.
The third high of $7,100 was paid by Violet Hills Illawarra’s of Gerringong, NSW for Ovensdale Buttercup 366 a 4 year old milking over 52 litres, these same buyers also selected Ovensdale Scarlet 330, VG at $4,250. Paul Rae of Allansford selected the correct 3 year old Ovensdale Jenny 95, VG at $6,800.
South Australian buyers were keen on many of the top lots. Glenbrook of Murray Bridge paid $5,500 for Ovensdale Beauty 383, VG 87, 413 kgs fat sired by Mitch and $4,000 for Ovensdale Pixie 137, VG by Jinny’s Empire. The Treeton herd of the Williams Family at Meningie paid $5,500 for Ovensdale Scarlet 255, EX 3E who had produced 440 kgs fat. The Springvale herd from Murray Bridge selected Ovensdale Scarlet 242, VG 89 at $4,000.
Two cows shared the $5,400 price tag, they were Ovensdale Scarlet 356, VG to R & A Heath of Bookar and Ovensdale Beauty 384 to Whitlock P/L of Finley, NSW. Local breeders J & B Evans purchased several top lots including Ovensdale Scarlet 194, VG 88 and over 98,000 litres lifetime at $5,000, Ovensdale Pearl 502, VG 87 and Ovensdale Buttercup 316, VG 87 both at $4,000.
Other noted sales included Ovensdale Pixie 95, EX 91 5E a Vic On Farm Challenge winner at $5,100 to D & R Ross of Heath Hill. Ovensdale Scarlet 327, VG at $4,400 to T & E Hayes, Ovensdale Scarlet 366 at $4,500 to S Ledger of Qld.
Selling agents Dairy Livestock Services report buyers were from all parts of Vic along with SA, Tas and Qld.
