Limousin and Limousin cross cattle have made a clean sweep of the top placings in WA’s premier feedlot and carcase competition -The Harvey Beef Gate 2 Plate Challenge.
Since the introduction of Limousin cattle into Australia 50 years ago they have dominated carcase competitions across the country demonstrating feedlot performance, yield, MSA compliance and marketability.
This year 57 teams consisting of 2 steers and 1 heifer representing most breeds and from across the state participated in the competition.
The teams were fed at Willyung Farms feedlot in Albany with the heifers on feed for 76 days and the steers for 83 days before they were processed at Harvey Beef.
This year’s 2023 winners were:
1st John Galati Family Trust Brunswick Limousin-Angus
2nd Unison Limousins Limousin
3rd Ravenhill Pastoral Limousin-Angus
Rod Galati won the competition for the second time being the inaugural winner of the competition in 2015. Rod will be known to many Limousin breeders as he won the carcase competition at Beef in 2021.
Unison Limousins came second with a purebred team demonstrating how competitive the modern purebred Limousin can be. Kevin and Sue Nettleton have proved to be the most consistent stud of all breeds in the competition having won it once and come second twice.
Ravenhill Pastoral came third in the competition. Relative newcomers to the competition Ken and Bonnie Ravenhill performed admirably in their second year in the competition and look forward to the challenge to move up the leader board next year. Ken and Bonnie operate WA’s largest dairy milking 1700 Friesian cows.
Overall, Limousin had 8 placegetters in the top 20.
Since the competition started in 2015, Limousin or Limousin cross cattle have won 5 out of 9 times proving just how well they can perform when placed on an equal footing with all comers.
