Limousin breeders inspect cow herds, stock yards and hear about buyer expectations

Limousin breeders met at Colac for a day of mainly Limousin-based activities inspecting stockyards, cow herds, and heard about buyer expectations.

At Beeac where Paul Meade, manager of Meade Agri, and Owen Rees representing Trac Nutrition presented on the Meade Agri-operated Vytelle Feed Efficiency system. The address covered the process of induction, the trial system, feed formulation, and the information gained from the trial process.

Visitors also had the opportunity to inspect the Te Pari stockyards onsite.

The next stop was Pelican Rise Limousin to see the cow herd and the progress of the early weaning of this year’s calves, Owen Rees answered the various questions associated with nutrition and the early weaning benefits for both cows and calves.

Andrew and Lyn Ralph’s Tooronga Limousin was the next stop where the cow herd with calves at foot and the 2023 bulls were on display. This was also an opportunity to view a great stockyard setup. During lunch, Jesse Brown of HF Richardson Stock Agents spoke about the bull market and the need to meet buyer expectations that are continually changing. A key message is that it is not about what we like as breeders but about what the buyers want for their operations.

Following lunch, the group headed to Pirron Yallock to visit Mack Creek Limousin operated by Roger Stinchcombe where Roger described the process of building his Limousin herd after a career in dairy farming.

Jack Gibson of Yeoronga Limousin was the next stop. Jack is a new youth member and has started building his herd while managing his work commitments in the agricultural industry.

A short distance down the road was an opportunity to inspect the 2023 Pelican Rise Limousin bulls and the spring calving group before progressing to Tanybryn Park Limousin at Birregurra where Helen Masters showed us through her herd of cows and calves which also included one of her Melbourne Show team.

The next stop was Otway Felix Limousin presented by Ros Galligan which is also in the Birregurra area. Ros had a group of joining heifers on display along with a small group of her 2023 bulls. While most visitors were looking for a rest a small group finished the tour at Chris and Marilyn’s Colac property to inspect the 2025 Autumn calving heifers.

The attendance and interest in this event certainly indicates it is likely to be repeated at other locations around Victoria.
