Hamish Chandler steps into role as interim CEO at Herefords Australia

Herefords Australia have appointed researcher Hamish Chandler to the interim role of chief executive officer upon the resignation of Alastair James just 12 months into the position.

Members were advised on September 4 Mr  James had resigned from his position, effectively immediately, following his appointment in August 2025.

“The challenges of being based remotely from the Armidale office, and the ongoing travel this requires, have proven increasingly difficult for the organisation, myself, and my family. I have therefore made the difficult decision to tender my resignation, effective immediately,” Mr James said.

“It has been a privilege to serve as CEO and to meet so many members, stakeholders, and supporters of the Hereford breed. I have greatly valued the opportunity to work with you, and I remain confident in the Hereford breed’s resurgence into the future. Thank you for your support during my time in the role.”

HAL chairman Marc Greening said over the course of his tenure at Herefords Australia, Alastair has been instrumental in the ongoing improvements in governance, consolidation of bank accounts and the delivery of new initiative such as Future Leaders and Breeders.

“The Herefords Australia board and staff sincerely thank Alastair for his leadership, dedication, and contributions during his tenure. His commitment to the Herefords community has been deeply valued, and we wish him all the best for the future,” Mr Greening said.

“The board is confident that there will be very little disruption to member services following on from Alastair’s departure. Staff will continue to deliver registry services to members, communications, marketing and R&D with the support of third-party contractors in the short term. We will start the recruitment process immediately.

“Hamish Chandler will step in as Interim CEO to ensure continuity of operations and support for our members. The Board is confident that Hamish’s intimate knowledge of the workings of Herefords Australia and knowledge of the industry will provide strong guidance during this transition.

“We remain committed to supporting our members and continuing the growth and success of Herefords Australia.”
