Young finalists vie for sheep and wool industry scholarship

Three young people from southern NSW have been announced as finalists in the sheep industry’s prestigious Peter Westblade Scholarship. Yerong Creek’s Josh Molloy, Manning Doughty, of Hay, and Emily Anderson, Binda, were chosen from a total of 24 applicants from NSW, Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania by a panel of industry judges.

Light, trade and heavy lambs all increase in price as buyer interest rises

At the close of Tuesday’s markets the eastern states restocker lamb indicator increased 2¢ to 549¢/kg cwt. Merino lambs lost 2¢ to 495¢/kg cwt, light lambs were up 8¢ to 526¢/kg cwt, trade lambs were up 3¢, to 537¢/kg cwt, heavy lambs increased 5¢ to 534¢/kg cwt and the mutton indicator was 8¢ dearer on 311¢/kg cwt.

The sheep industry has a new tool to bolster its bottom line, by producers improving the lean meat yield obtained from each carcase and processors and retailers saving time in preparing meat for sale. The lean meat yield (LMY) of a lamb carcase is a direct driver of profit for producers, processors and retailers alike and a new industry manual has been released to assist the supply chain to extract maximum value from this important measure.

Australian lamb export value reaches record of $1.75 billion

Australian lamb export values for 2015 reached a value of A$1.78 billion FOB, 5% above 2014 and 44% above the five year average (Australian Bureau of Statistics). The average unit value for Australian lamb exports during 2015 averaged $7.10/kg – up 4% year-on-year.
